Down and out in PB…

It’s been a while since I put pen to paper (and I really do mean “pen” to “paper” – I find I do my best writing going old school rather than typing on a computer). Can’t blame anything but laziness really. Work time has been more procrastination than work, and with the amount of hours I sit in front of my computer I really have to start working on my efficiency. Feels like I’m putting in fulltime hours for a barely part-time output. Nothing new there really, procrastination’s been the story of my life! I even brought a couple of books once on how to overcome procrastination… and then I never got around to reading them. Yep, same old same old…

But my writing, that’s supposed to be something I’m really passionate about, hence I’m really beginning to wonder just what it will take to motivate me…

I certainly can’t blame my environment. The last month has been spent in Pacific Beach (“PB” to the locals), a wonderfully relaxing, chilled out beachside suburb of San Diego. It’s early November in the US, and I’m sitting here mid-morning in shorts, t-shirt, thongs (sorry, flip flops for the non-Australians reading this), sun warming my back, working my way through a fresh bagel sandwich and freshly squeezed juice…

I’ve been in the US for just over two months now. Flew into Fort Lauderdale to hang out with my friend Larry for a week or so, then hired a car and drove up to Virginia to see family. Boy, that was a long drive, far longer than I’d realised. And I had to do the return trip too, there and back in 10 days. Boy, what a drive! I underestimated the distance, I underestimated the time it would take, the cost of petrol, motel accommodation, food… prices have changed just a wee bit since 1994. No kidding!

What I should have done was no hire car, and a few extra flights city to city, catching up and spending time with more friends rather than days in a car alone… but always easy in hindsight isn’t it?

But Pacific Beach I do love, hence the plan to hang out here for a couple of months. One of the places I could live if I ever chose to settle in the US.

Anyway, my bagel is finished and I must get back to work… and attempt to use my hours more efficiently! If only I knew the secret to achieving this…?
